As the Oculus Rift S got released May 21, 2019, compared to the original consumer version getting released on March 28, 2016, there are a ton of differences that improves and might make you want to get your hands on one. To compare the Rift S vs CV1 it’s important to see their specs. As they are both PC- Powered (needing a PC to use), they are the same price point of $399.99 but slightly different. Here’s how Oculus has improved its headset:

Headset Comparison

  • Pass-Through Plus
    • Ability to use the cameras on the headset to see around
  • Comfort/Adjusting
    • It’s easier to set up and adjust. The “halo” fits more comfortably on more people’s heads while giving more space for users with glasses.
  • Cable Length
    • The Rift S has 3 feet more length of wire.
  • 3.5mm audio jack
    • You can use your own headphones while playing/fewer issues with audio.

Controllers

  • Different layout
    • More efficient and more comfortable for the hands.
      • The CV1’s controllers are very well made too, however.

Display/Tracking

  • Resolution increased by 42% & Sub-pixel count increased by 113%
    • Images will appear much sharper and higher resolution.
  • Reduced screen door effect
    • Less of a feeling of wearing a headset
  • Much quicker setup
    • Setup takes about a minute, much more out-of-box feeling
  • No external sensors to set up and run cabling for and only needs 1 USB 3.0 port on a single USB controller
    • Less set up and much more convenient and less of a hassle.

Oculus is no longer selling the CV1 and instead, you must buy the Rift S. There is no difference in price and if you’re looking to get into VR, the Rift S is the best choice.

Comparing the Rift S vs CV1, it makes the Rift S a much better option. Comparing the new Rift to its old competitor, the HTC Vive, the Rift S is a better option.
